Uther raised an eyebrow. "Your...chariot?" He eyed the dirty white vehicle askance. He'd learned to coexist with cars, of course. Apparently Arthur had once been hit by one, thereby causing everyone a great deal of grief. Uther, for his part, was not inclined to run out into the road and indulge in a tragic accident.

He had not had much direct experience with anything large and motorized, however, and this was certainly an interesting development. He wanted to know more about them. They went very fast, and very far, without tiring, which was useful. You had to sit inside them, rather than astride them, which was an inconvenience. And they didn't have minds of their own, like horses, which was either a great shame or a great relief.

"Are we going somewhere?"

"Unfortunately no." Chase said, leaving the Bus idling as he rummaged in the back seat for a concealed tool box. It took a few yanks, but he had it out a moment later and walked over to the engine. "Getting here really messed her up. Auto-repair is almost shot, gotta take care of most of it manually. Bus, give me the location of the temporal-spacial GPS."

"Yes, Master Stein," An electronic, vaguely female voice said, and as soon as he had the hood propped open again, the edges of a small box within were glowing. He reached in with a small wrench and loosened the bolts keeping it anchored in place. "Thanks. Instructions on how to calibrate."

"Return the settings to default and replace."

"Cool, got it. I'm...guessing you have no idea how to drive, do you?" Chase asked Uther, disappearing under the hood of the bus again to return the GPS unit to it's place.

"No, I do not." Uther watched Chase work on the innards of the metal machine. "But I do know that cars do not usually talk back."

It wasn't...a glamourous vehicle. He had seen sleeker and faster, studier and more predatory-looking examples in the town. But it spoke, and instructed Chase how to repair it, and it was accessible.

"It seems a little like steering a ship?" There was a wheel, and it changed the direction.

"Got that, brother. I'm beginning to think my habit of being such a disobedient little fuck gave my 'rents a thing about having everything they built be programmed to kiss their ass and enjoy it." He laughed to himself a little.

"Though, if the Frog is any indication, she'll be taking orders from you in no time. The 'rents were big on user friendliness too. Bus, say hello to Uther Pendragon."

'Hello, Uther Pendragon. If you wish to learn how to operate me, I am capable of instructing--

"Hey, hey, that's enough flirting from you." Chase cut the Bus off. There was a loud, cranking wrench from deep within the engine and when he appeared again, he was holding a long, cracked length of metal tubing. "What is this and how do I replace it?"

'The fuel injection matrix must be reconfigured, the current configuration is insufficient to power utilization. Consult alternate configurations in holo records.' The Bus said in a tone that was slightly more demure than it had been a moment before ( ... )

"And there's always Medieval Times and Renaissance Faires if you get homesick!" Chase pointed out happily. "All the swords, armor and jousting without the plagues and hygiene problems of real medieval England." He couldn't help it, the thought of going to a faire with a real medieval king was way too amusing. Chase laughed. "Once it warms up, I'll have to see if there any of those around. I might even be able to bring Old Lace and pass her off as a really realistic costume. And if you teach me how to sword fight, I might even win a duel or two."

'This is going to be too great.

"I'd like to get back eventually but...I think Vic can handle the girls for a while." A thread of guilt slipped into his voice at that. "It'll be rough, but we always got by somehow. Nico's more competent than she gives herself credit. They'll be better off without an idiot like me for a while."

"I would be glad to teach you," Uther said, a note of pleasure in his voice at the idea of returning the favour. "But what is a Renaissance Faire?"

"Sweeet... as much as I love my Fistigons, it would be nice to have an ace in the hole if they get damaged. I wanted to be on the fencing and lacrosse teams in school, but dad thought I was enough of a 'dumb jock' as it was." There was a slight snarl in the back of his throat at the words.

"Oh, Rennaisance Faires are the best. A bunch of actors dress up and pretend to live in a medieval castle town--there's sword fighting and jousting tournaments and the food vendors are unbelievable. Last time we got together before whole mess with the 'rents there was a faire in Burbank, they had turkey drumsticks the size of your arm. Trust me, you'd fit right in." Chase polished off his coffee and not a minute after he set the empty mug down, it was refilled. 'And good service to boot. I might just like it here after all.'

Modern people had too much time on their hands. Apparently his times were a subject for entertainment now. Life was so easy here. Uther tried the sausage. It was much less spiced and dense than the sausages of his day. Life was easy.

"Ought we to bring some food back to the castle now?"
