The problem, really, was that after close to year of intense reprogramming--from assassin to savior--, Damien's ears were sensitive to certain sounds. The afternoon crowds were heavily than they'd been, people were taking strength in numbers it seemed, but everyone else seemed to either ignore or cast the sobbing woman and baby a look of detached pity. Something that said 'well, it's none of my business really, is it?' It was none of Damien's business either, but then, he didn't think like most people.

"Tch. Pathetic." Damien muttered as he approached the woman.

There might have been a good reason why no one stopped to ask her what was wrong. What with the monsters about, Hermione had no qualms about openly carrying her wand, and having it in easy reach at all times. Which is why, hearing the approach- and muttered comments- of the unfamiliar young man approaching, she snatched her wand and whirled on him in a fury, pointing it at his nose.

"You better not be making comments at my expense," she said, sounding a little wild and dangerous through her tears. "Because I am having a miserable day, and I'm sure you haven't done anything to deserve my hexing you into oblivion." She hadn't heard what he said, not really. But she recognized the tone. How often had she wound up crying in the girls' toilet because of things people had said in that exact tone?

A short, annoyed sigh hissed by the boy's lips. "I meant them." One tiny hand motioned to the crowd around them. He didn't blink at the wand, though he his scowl, working in Gotham he'd had a lot stranger pointed at him in the course of a day.

'What mother cries in front of their child, anyway?'

"What's the matter ma'ma?" Damien asked, the question stiff, strange sounding as he was out of costume, but costume or no, badge or no, training was training. "Are you hurt?" She didn't look injured, but outward appearance was no indication.

She eyed him warily for a moment, then lowered her wand a fraction. "No," she said. "Not hurt, no. Thanks for asking." Good heavens! Was this another un-childlike child in Aternaville? First Nokoru, then the boy at the park, and now... though perhaps this was the same child, who had assisted with the Dementors. If it was, his superhero persona was brilliant; no one would suspect that that helpful, eager young man was the same as the stiff, dour child in front of her. Was he really that good of an actor?

And why was she so eager to cast him in the role of 'superhero'? He could be one of any young people who might be actively concerned about a person's well-being... except he sounded like he was anything but. Not that she would doubt his sincerity-- if he hadn't wanted to come over, he certainly wouldn't have. But... it just seemed an ill fit, somehow ( ... )
