There wasn't a lot Rory was really sure of, at the moment ( ... )

"Yes, blue box," he said. "His time machine- his TARDIS- looked like a blue police box. And that's how I got to the back-end-of-the-universe... Hello, Doris!" he said, interrupting himself.

The woman at the desk, who looked like she should have been a telephone operator from the late 1950s- cat-eye glasses and all-- lifted her head from her paperwork with a bored expression. "Hello, Mr. Williams," she said, her voice a piercing nasal drone. "Back so soon?"

"I brought you another one," Rory said, gesturing at Lily. "For your... interview... thing."

Doris turned a critical eye to Lily. "Welcome to the Employment Office for Alternative Medical Practices," she droned at her in a bored sort of way. "Have a seat, please; I'm going to need to ask you a few questions."

Lily nodded, listening and trying to take it all in as Rory suddenly began talking to a woman who reminded her strongly of the librarian at Hogwarts. When Lily was a first year, and up until third year, she was slightly terrified by the imposing woman. Afterward, she grew to realize that the woman wasn't the scariest person in the school and wouldn't do anything to actually harm her. Voldemort put that in perspective.

But this woman gave Lily the same stomach turning feeling for a moment, even though she didn't look too menacing. Just sounded as if she had a better place to be.

"I - er - sure. Thank you for the opportunity. I'll answer whatever questions you may have." Lily offered the woman a small smile, outwardly confident.

"Thank you," the woman said. "We'll start with personal information. Please give me your name, age, birthplace, and whatever the date was when you suddenly found yourself here." She pulled a pen from where it was safely tucked into her bun and clicked it once. "The year will be sufficient."

She nodded. Simple enough. "Lily Evans. Nineteen years of age, born in a hospital in Northern England and it was 1979." June of 1979, but who was keeping track of that.

She nodded, writing quickly. "Mm. Where did you study medicine-slash-healing-slash-alternative medical practices, and what do you specialize in?"

"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I didn't study specific things, but I know simple healing spells such as stopping bleeding, mending wounds, that sort of thing." Lily raised her eyebrows apologetically. "I read a few introductory books about how to be a healer from St. Mungo's, but I never had the time to take a proper class." What with the war looming.

"Hmm..." The pen scratched across the page. "Magic healing. Wizardry, not sorcery... incantation... focus item: wand. Is that correct?" She looked up at Lily over the rims of her glasses. "Or are you better with potions? Hogwarts seems to focus on a brand of wand-using magic, according to the town records."

"Yes, that's correct." Lily chewed on her lip, wondering where the woman got her information. "I am excellent with potions, though. I use a wand, but potions were my best subject."

She tapped the pen against her lips, thoughtfully. "I'm fairly certain that could come in useful," she said. "Provided we can find you any usable ingredients- that seems to be the hardest part about potions. If not, we'll just introduce you to our pharmacist-- potions and pharmaceuticals have to be somewhere on the same family tree." Jotting down a few more notes, she said, "I know for a fact that there isn't another medical wizard or witch anywhere on staff, nor is there likely to be one in the area. Otherwise, I would recommend meeting with him or her, and getting yourself some more advanced skills." She raised her eyebrows. "We can always use another full-fledged doctor in the place." Studying her notes, she said, "But I think that the staff down in the ER and the outpatient clinic would be happy to have you, even if you simply worked as an expediter-- wound cleaning, blood staunching, healing wounds that need stitching, that sort of thing."

Lily nodded. "Isn't there...some sort of magical community that has that? An apothecary or something?" She couldn't find Diagon Alley on her short trip back to England, but it's been years. Perhaps the location of entrance had to be changed due to a war. But it would be interesting trying to use muggle ingredients. Some things would obviously not have the same magical properties. But it would be worth a shot.

No medical witches or wizards around. Okay. That was fine. That didn't mean there weren't any witches or wizards.

Was Doris actually offering her a job? Basically doing the work she'd done during the war except in a muggle setting?

"That's. That would be fantastic. Really?"

She nodded, twisting her chair until she faced the computer monitor, where she quickly pulled up schedules. "The ER is notoriously short-staffed," she said, "and half of what comes through there are people 'just making sure' they're not actually seriously injured." Wheeling around, she fixed Lily with a look. "Out of curiosity, do you know anything about a-- total Petri-ficcus something or other? A full body immobilization spell or something like that?"

"Petrificus totalus? Yeah." Most second years could do that spell in their sleep. Lily was no different. She could also finish "I can perform one, remove one. Pretty basic sort of spell."

"Oh, good," said Doris. "Because the next time a patient decides to use one on a doctor, it would be nice to have another doctor to turn to, instead of having to call the Police."

"What?" said Rory.

"Oh, yeah," Doris said, looking at him. "It was before you got here-- crazy pregnant woman got upset with her doctor and put a spell on him, and took off. Had to call her boyfriend, the Police Chief or whatever, because he was the only other person who knew how to remove it-- and he was furious with the doctor for upsetting her. Never mind that she completely immobilized him!"

Lily's eyes widened. Pregnant woman with magic and the police chief who was a wizard. She'd definitely have to go speak to them. See when they were from, what was going on with the Ministry.

"He's fine now, though, right?"

"Oh, yes, dear, totally fine," Doris said. "Completely refuses to see her again, as a patient or otherwise, but I think that's only to be expected. He wasn't her regular doctor, anyway, or so he'll tell anyone within earshot, if you ask him. I still say," she added, "that it would have been better to solve the whole thing in-house. He was awfully insulted by that police chief person."

It was funny how a little gossip perked Doris right up.

"...right," said Rory. "Um. Who should she be reporting to, then?"

"Oh. Yes," Doris said, turning back to the computer again and typing fervently.

Rory looked at Lily, and rolled his eyes to the ceiling.
