Haley was happy. Happier than she had been in a long time, and she was, in general, a very happy person. It was just one bit of good news after the next that day. (Secretly, she was glad that Aaron was alone when she returned to their apartment. Dr. Reid was mostly nice, when he wasn't accidentally being insensitive, but this was something she had to talk about with her husband alone first. It would be up to him to tell his team in whichever order he chose, but none of them got to hear it before her mother and sister.)

She'd been thinking about how to tell Aaron, but his quip about her shopping gave her the perfect opportunity. She calmly folded her hands over her stomach and said, "Not a whole army, but at least one more mouth."

She couldn't remember the last time she smiled that widely.

Aaron was half way to putting a gallon of milk away, leaning into the fridge, when something about the phrasing of what Haley said caught his attention. At first his reaction would be that Reid would be coming over for dinner, and that it was nice he finally decided to not sequester himself away.

'One more mouth...'

The gallon almost slipped out of his hand, suddenly slick. Aaron straightened, brows furrowed and blinked at his wife, eyes lingering for a moment on her stomach.

"Haley, are you saying--?" The words couldn't pass his throat of the first try, his mind was working too quickly.

'Oh god.'

Aaron looked flabbergasted. It was so rare that she was able to surprise him with anything--one of the trials of being married to a profiler--that seeing the stunned look on his face actually came somewhat close to being able to tell him the good news. (No, not really. There was nothing like this feeling.)

"Yes. We're having a baby." She stepped forward and leaned against him, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. "You're going to be a daddy, Aaron."

The refrigerator door swung out, forgotten, and the milk dropped, bounced, and rolled to join it. A million thoughts at once pushed themselves up Aaron's wind-pipe, but for a long moment it was in the air which one would nudge ahead.

'I'm going to be a father? I've got to call Sean. We'll need a bigger place. Is it a boy or a girl? Should call the bank in Virginia, open a savings account for college. College. Elementary school. We'd need to move somewhere with a good school district. Sean has all of the baby things from when he and I were little, maybe he can send some up. What are we going to do about Christmas? JJ was supposed to host this year, can she accommodate a little kid? Why wouldn't she...'"I'm going to be a father?" Hotch repeated, his own arms wrapping around Haley, half lifting her off the floor. "Haley, that's great! We're going to be parents!" He spun her to the other side of the discarded gallon of milk, almost perching her to sit on the counter itself, like they were teenagers again. "When did you find out out? Do ( ... )
