Wes was excited. He'd been woken up at various points in the night by power surges all over town, including, distressingly, from Tosh's townhouse. Figuring Dairine could handle herself even if she wasn't in the proper body whatever it was this time, Wesley slipped on a heavy coat and gloves and made his way down Main Street.

There was only one person waiting outside of Teaspoon when he arrived there, so he strode right up to the young man.

"Brian, hello, I'm Wesley, it's good to meet you, why don't we go inside and talk?" A quick peek inside revealed that Ianto was still and and...as far as he could tell, still Ianto.

Brian smiled at the approaching guy, who seemed to be about his age, maybe a little older. "Hi, Wesley." He spoke with a bit of a lisp--the result of having recently had his braces taken off. "Sure, that sounds like a good idea. It's colder than I thought."

He followed Wesley into the cafe. "So I take it this is a small town in Canada where people tend to magically appear?"

Wes nodded. "I wouldn't use the word magic, really, but it would certainly look that way to someone who didn't understand the science of what was happening." He nodded to a free table away from the bar, just in case Ianto left like teasing him today.

"Which, you seem to, at least the basics. How did you get here, what year are you from?" Wesley asked. Ever since last night he had been working on an alternate theory, taking everything he'd already supposed and throwing most of it out the window. "Things like this happen pretty regularly around here, I'm just trying to figure out exactly what it is this time. You said you woke up in a house that wasn't yours? Was there anything to tell you who it belonged to?" If it were just a consciousness transplant like last time, Brian would remember being in town before, which obviously wasn't the case.

Brian smiled. "One of the themes of classic science fiction. Advanced technologies seem magical or godlike to civilizations that don't understand them." He followed Wesley to the table.

"Thanks!" Brian beamed, pleased that someone seemed to think his arcane knowledge was a good thing. "I woke up here without any warning. I'm from 1985, which I guess is 25 years ago." He blinked. "Do they really? This town isn't by any chance sitting on a quantum singularity, is it? Or some kind of unstable wormhole?" He'd read way too much Asimov for this not to be the most exciting thing that had ever happened to him.

Brian nodded. "Yeah. Whoever lived there left his wallet on the bureau. His name is John Smith, if you want to believe that, which I don't. Too much of a coincidence."

The piped music playing over the Teaspoons' sound system was suddenly replaced with a jazzy piano number. A man in a shiny cream-colored suit, a bow tie made of shoelaces, and small white membranous wings appeared sitting on the counter, clicking his heels together to the beat. He smiled broadly at the startled patrons, and broke into song.

Cold days, they get you down
My friends, no need to frown
You need some heat
Look to your feet!
Have I got a shoe for you!

He bounced lightly off the counter, spinning into a softshoe number that took him between the tables. Whirling around, he pointed at one man, transforming his shoes into a pair of fluffy puppy slippers.

Shoes that wag their tails and bark...
Shoes that light up in the dark...A woman this time, who with a wiggle of his fingers found herself wearing glow-in-the-dark sneakers with small flashlights mounted on the sides ( ... )

Brian was a creature of logic and reason. And his logic and reason told him that some winged fairy had just appeared, given everyone new shoes, and left.

"That was unexpected," he said. "Does that guy come here often?"

If Wesley were anyone else--if he had served on any ship other than the Enterprise-- a fairy that bestowed shoes would have seemed downright bizzarre ( ... )

"An alternate dimension? You mean this is a parallel universe to mine?" Honestly, that was a little disappointing to Brian. He'd been hoping this was his universe, just the future of it. He listened carefully to Wesley's words, thinking carefully before he responded. "But since alternate dimensions aren't located in the same space, strictly speaking, couldn't there be a wormhole between them?"

"You're from the future?" Now this was excellent. Brian loved this. "The twenty-fourth century? So is this kind of thing taught in elementary schools there?"

Brian nodded. "Oh, yeah. John Smith and Pocahontas. But in my time, at least, it's used as a pseudonym a lot. When someone doesn't want you to know his real name, he says he's John Smith. Pretty common."
