She never should have hoped for a white Christmas. River sort of missed snow, in that way that you miss a particularly unpleasant friend. Fun to play with, until it bit your toes. Still, she held a long, messily-wrapped package under her arm, hurrying down the sidewalk, boots making odd noises in the slush. Johnny had said to come by any time. She figured it was the least she could do to bring something along.
The closer she got, the worse the lakefront winds became. Sure, it was wonderful to live on the water, but her numb fingers and toes protested anyway.
Otherwise, she made it in one piece, up the steps to the doorway, and rang the bell.
