If this were The Frontier and a human had spoken to him like the pimpled young man just had, The Baron wouldn't have thought twice about flinging his sorry, impertinent carcass through the nearest window. It was going to take a lot to accept the fact that his status here meant nothing, no matter how much dark aura he exuded.

As it was, he was stuck trying to explain how he could not simply rid himself of his horses and carriage because the house he was purchasing did not have the proper permits to hold them.

"Why, then, would the property come with a carriage house and stable if not for the express purpose of keeping a horse drawn carriage?"

"Well, if you're going to use them, they have to be up to code. According to the plans the original occupants built it to be ornamental, so you'd have to pay..."

"Money is not a problem. What is, is the fact that I cannot help that I need my horses and carriage with me tonight, and every night after this, whether the facility in question matches your code or not."

Why was this so difficult ( ... )

Felix blinked. It took him a long moment to realize the man was addressing him. Even looked around for a half second before realizing that yes, they were the only two here, and immediately felt embarrassed. He cleared his throat and quickly tucked away the bit of plastic into his back pocket. "No, uh...no, it's alright. I'm in no rush."

A bit of a lie. He had papers to grade, and it was his turn to do the dishes. (Though, the way Kara kept house, it felt like every night was his turn. Gaeta didn't complain. Things were going to get done one way or the other.) It was no wonder he looked tired.

He was going to go back to minding his business. He should have, but then the conversation in itself was so bizarre, he had to add a quizzical --

"Horses?"

Byron nodded to the man. "I arrived here in my carriage, and have been staying there until now. However, according to some silly code I cannot keep the beasts with me despite having all the proper facilities." For a moment The Baron glared at the young man behind the counter, one eyebrow arched as if to say, 'that sums it up, doesn't it?'

"But it is no matter for now, please, go ahead of me. It doesn't seem like I'll be making any progress tonight..." The sarcasm that dripped from his voice was almost palatable.

"Uh, I just need to pick up my -- " The red-faced boy behind the counter slid across a manila envelope. " -- thanks." Felix picked it up, thumbing briefly through the contents. The usual sort of thing, he expected. Consent forms, release forms, background forms, applications, reminders, rules, regulations...he snapped it shut and offered the attendant a tight smile. There was no response in kind before a Sorry! We're closed! sign swung into the glass partition.

Well he certainly hadn't expected him to be that rude about it...though looking at the tall, thin man, Felix certainly got the impression that perhaps fear was the motivator.

No, not that there was anything outwardly frightening about him. He looked...normal, if a bit pale. Attractive. But something about him -- indeed something that Felix couldn't place -- was off. He took the chance. "So...why don't you just invest in some proper facilities?"
