As the Doctor strolled through the door, Ianto was pouring boiling water into a china teapot full of dried leaves. Proper tea that'd have to be strained into a cup, not this bag nonsense. For a while, the aroma of the tea overpowered that of the coffee, which was impressive. "Darjeeling alright for you, Doctor?"
The steeping tea was placed on a tray bearing cups and little tea sandwiches. Well, why not? If they were having tea, they should go all the way with it.
"It's brilliant," the Doctor assured him, his eyes lighting up at the sandwiches. "Ta!" he said, plucking one from the tray and taking a bite. He made a pleased humming sound which turned into an outright moan when he sipped his tea.
"It's quite possible that I love you," the Doctor said, grinning and holding up his teacup in salute. "Best cuppa I've had...well since you left really."
"If you're going to be naughty with my tea, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to keep it to yourself," he said, terribly amused at the Doctor and his joy over tea. The tea had to be seriously bad if this was sending him into raptures. Ianto poured himself a cup and found someplace to perch where he could sip and they could talk.
"I missed you too, while I was away. It was odd, I never expected it, but .. well." He shrugged sheepishly and fumbled in his pockets for his PDA.
The Doctor watching as Ianto pulled out his PDA and a thrill of excitement ran through him. "So what did you find? I'm rather jealous, by the way, that you found something that I missed. It's embarrassing really, but what can you do?"
River swung their linked hands gleefully between them, taking in the afternoon air. Warmed by tea and company, she found herself feeling almost...normal. Unburdened by thoughts of escape.
Still, of her many burdens, the one of foresight would never leave her.
"Nothing good will come of it," she murmured at her feet. "These signals. It never does."
"It's because not all of the experts were poking at them," Ianto decided and moved to scoop up River's other hand. It was wildly affectionate for Ianto, but he'd do nearly anything for River.
The Doctor grinned over River's head at Ianto, not feeling the least bit of embarrassment at the sight they must pose.
"Oi! I was an expert! It just behaved in ways I didn't expect! Warped time, space and well, the laws of life and physics, tend to make things unpredictable."
River enjoyed being a bridge, smiling somewhat bashfully at the ground as her two (currently) favorite people competed for her affections. A spirited effort. She squeezed Ianto's hand a little bit in return, letting him know he hadn't been forgotten. And wouldn't be.
"Experts can't be experts if the field is unpioneered." She looked pointedly at the Doctor. "Or pioneered poorly. Fatalities. Little Timmy has died of dysentery."

And the Doctor wasn't that bad, he decided.
