Were this scenario occurring while they were still teenagers, or even in the time after Azkaban, Sirius would have automatically responded with the customary 'I am Sirius.' But neither of those things were the case.

To be completely honest though, Sirius was starting to tire of the same conversation, the same argument, with Remus. And he knew that was mostly on his own head. So he lifted his head. "Hmm? What is it?"

Remus steeled himself. "I want to move out," he said in a rush, trying not to hesitate or waver. He couldn't let himself have enough time to change his mind.

He sipped his tea and tried to muster the confidence to tell Sirius that Sirius wasn't going to care. He couldn't do it. He couldn't look Sirius in the eye either. He had said he would never leave, hadn't he?

Sirius blinked two or three times at the other man before he decided that yes, he had correctly heard. And no, there was no dulling the pain that stabbed through his chest and stomach. "You want to-- want to leave?"

God, did he have to sound like such a bloody child about it?

Remus flinched. And how was he supposed to leave after hearing that? Yes, he ought to leave. What was the point of him staying? They were miserable together. They were miserable apart. Might as well give them both the chance to find someone else to be less miserable with. Not that Remus would, but Sirius was twenty-something. He shouldn't be tied down in the first place.

"Yes."
