A dispassionate, sexless voice spoke through hidden speakers in the room. "Choose one of the following; Harriet Jones or Mickey Smith?"

Two rooms lit up on the other side of the two-way mirrors. On the left, Harriet Jones sat, pale but straight as an arrow on her chair, her gaze very direct. She clutched her robe tight at the neck, looking as though she was dragged out of bed.

On the right, Mickey paced, fear giving his skin an unhealthy sheen. His eyes were red with unshed tears and his thin t-shirt soaked with sweat.

Choose?

The question made sense when the rooms lit up, showing him the two occupants. "Mickey?" he said, slightly breathless as he jumped to his feet. "Mickey!" he shouted, pounding on the glass, but there was no response.

"Choose one of the following; Harriet Jones or Mickey Smith?" the voice repeated, expressionless.

"Choose? What do you mean choose?" the Doctor asked, looking around the room. "What is this?" He'd moved to the other mirror, looking at Harriet Jones.

"Choose one of the following; Harriet Jones or Mickey Smith?"

"Fine! Mickey Smith! Now tell me what this about?" he said, exasperated.

"Choice accepted."

The door opened behind Mickey and a figure in shadow beckoned him out. His burst into tears and stumbled out the door, mouth moving in soundless thanks.

The light went out in his room.

The door opened behind Harriet and a figure in shadow pulled a gun from a holster on his hip and shot her in the head. One eye rolled back in her skull as blood flowed down her face and she slid down the chair.

The light went out in her room.

"Choose one of the following; Clarice Ferguson or River Tam?"

Behind him, lights came up in two more rooms. On the left, Clarice was sitting in the chair with her knees drawn up under her chin, her heels on the chair edge. One arm was wrapped tightly around her knees, the other curved up over her head. Her expression made it clear that she was struggling not to cry.

On the right, River sat perfectly still, eyes confused and unfocused, fixated on her hands. (Ten fingers, she'd count, because it kept her from seeming afraid.) But she was afraid, breath seizing and muscles tight. The ( ... )

"NOO!" the Doctor shouted at Harriet fell to the ground. "NO!"

He hands were pressed against the glass, his breath fogging up the mirror. "You didn't have to do that!" he shouted, pounding uselessly against the glass.

The Doctor ran and picked up the chair, throwing it towards the mirror. It bounced off, not make so much as a crack.

"Choose one of the following; Clarice Ferguson or River Tam?"

The Doctor froze as the opposing rooms lit up, reveling their occupants.

"No," he whispered. "You can't do this!"

His mind reached out, searching for River's.

River? River, can you hear me? I'm here, River, I'm going to get you out of this.

It was met by echoing silence.

"Choose one of the following; Clarice Ferguson or River Tam?"

"So you can kill one of them? No! No I won't choose!"

River! You've got to fight! Run! RUN!

He ran to the mirror of the room holding Clarice. "Clarice! Blink! You've got to Blink!" he cried, pounding on the glass.

"Choose one of the following; Clarice Ferguson or River Tam?"

"NO!"
