Church didn't have a handy device inside of his head, like Delta. He didn't have the Freelancer paranoia like Tex, either. But he could still sense when someone was following him. So as he walked along, that long, sleek black sniper rifle resting on his shoulder, he couldn't help but get that feeling... and he'd glance over his shoulder every few minutes. But there wasn't anyone there. Huh.
He'd gone into Tex's basement and snagged the rifle back from the room she'd stored it in (it was his, after all, he'd brought it here)... and decided he was going to go fix the sights on the thing. Because everyone always messed with them.. right before he went to shoot at someone. It was a dirty, dirty trick
( ... )
The flat, skeptical voice came from behind. From River. She sat atop a stack of narrow boxes that likely were not meant to be sat on, but the girl weighed hardly anything, so where was the harm? When Church turned to acknowledge her, River pulled her legs up, crossing them Indian-style.
She'd been there only a few minutes, and definitely long enough to see him miss. And though she wasn't sure who Tucker was, the fault was hardly mechanical.
He jerked a little bit when he heard the voice, strictly because he'd thought he was alone, and.. well, she'd startled him! So sue him, he was a little jumpy sometimes. Blue eyes lifted up to her though and he turned slowly, holding onto the rifle with one hand while the other came down to rest at his side.
"Are you stalking me now?" Asked with a lift of his brows, but it was clearly amusement on his face, and not annoyance. It tugged up at the corners of his mouth until he was smirking. "And I bet the likes of you are going to show me how to do it right?"
He paused a second before stepping forward, lifting the gun to carry it in front of him. "Someone messed with the sights."
Her other eyebrow lifted to follow suit, lips twitching into a smile. Today her mood was...decidedly playful. Strange, but even River had to have her good days. Well, it was amusing he thought she was stalking him, because he'd been the one to approach her last time. And also it seemed he forgot that River wasn't a sort of girl to underestimate.
She had floored him last time, remember?
Still grinning, River hopped off the stack and met Church halfway. "Positive?" She held out her hands, expecting him to give her the weapon. Silly mood indeed.
His brows shot up when she took off and ran -- he wasn't going to hold her to her end of the deal, because he hadn't hit what he was aiming for, but when she took off.. well, of course he was going to chase her! But he had to carry that sniper rifle with him. He was faster than River, being genetically enhanced, and knew how to run with the rifle. So she had better put on some evasive measures, or he'd catch her fairly quickly.
"Where you going, critter?" Called after her, fingers tightening around the gun as he chased after her.
River had good reflexes, but not speed, exactly. She was fast enough in a fight, but on foot Church had the definite advantage. Even bobbing and weaving, running past shops and around slow-moving cars, he caught up with her. She was laughing about it, though, giggling madly when he caught up with her. This was just a game, and she'd found herself a new playmate.
"Concede." He repeated the word as he caught her, the hand not holding the gun wrapping around her stomach to tug her firmly back into his chest, then he lifted her right off of her feet. It was awkward, the way he was holding her, but he was strong enough to do it. He simply had his arm wrapped around her waist and lifted her so her butt would rest on his abdomen, and he'd be able to hold her up off of her feet against his torso. She was facing away from him, so when he leaned in, he spoke near the back of her ear.
River kicked a little, pushing at his arm with a grimace. "Didn't cheat! You did! Liar liar! Went for the heart but got the brainpan instead!" So of course this was Church's fault. Who else? They were getting some odd looks from the occasional passerby -- the fact that River was still laughing being one of the only things keeping them from thinking the tall man with the gun was a kidnapper or serial rapist. Or something equally horrendous. Honestly the situation looked bad.
"Let her down! York would very much disapprove!" Hadn't he said he would tell Tex all about their last misunderstanding?

Which left Church.
River arched a dark eyebrow. "You did it wrong."
