It was odd, the connection between a Time Lord and his TARDIS. Even on the other side of town he was aware of her, her voice always humming away in his mind. When the tone changed, the Doctor smiled.
Jack had finally come to visit.
Drinking his tea in one quick gulp, he threw a few bills on the table, and left the cafe, making a beeline for the mansion. He took the stairs two at a time, entering the master suite and walking to the TARDIS.
Grinning, he stepped inside and looked around. No Jack, but he knew he was here. Knowing where he was bound to be, the Doctor went to the wardrobe, smiling when he saw Jack there, going through the vast number of costumes.
The Doctor chuckled. "You and me both. We weren't meant to settle, you and me. And yet here we are." He looked curiously at Jack. "Why do you think that is? Is it this bizarre town, or is it us?"
"Maybe it's something in the Canadian air?" Jack stretched a hand across the distance between them, taking hold of the Doctor's tie. He rubbed the fabric between his fingers.
"What is it about you, Doctor, that makes us humans absolutely crazy about you? We'll follow you into impossible situations and lay down our lives for you. Some of us several times."
The Doctor looked down at the fingers holding his tie. "I don't know what's worse, that I keep taking taking you lot into dangerous situations, or that you keep following me." He raised his eyes, meeting Jack's. "I suppose it's pretty selfish of me, but I've gotten so tired of being alone...I risk your lives time and again, and still you follow me."
The Doctor cleared this throat and smiled. "You humans really are thick. Mental really."
"You inspire us. And...I think most of them follow you because you show them something new. They can't sit with their heads in the sand after they see the universe."
Jack, of course, was different from most of the Doctor's companions. He had already seen what time and space had to offer. And yet, even he had been changed by his time with the Doctor. Immortality aside.
He released the Doctor's tie before he did something he would have regretted.
Yes, he showed them the universe, then sent them back to their mundane lives. If they knew how it would inevitably end, would they still agree to go with him? He thought of Sarah Jane, the parts of her life she'd put on hold because of him.
He smiled sadly at Jack. "Mental," he repeated, reaching out to cup Jack's face. "And I wouldn't trade you lot for the world."
The Doctor dropped his hand and began rummaging through the clothes. "So this dance, forties era you say?" he asked, changing the subject.
Jack had already seen time and space by the time he had met the Doctor. He had followed the Doctor into hell because he admired the man. The Last of the Time Lords. By his time, they were the thing of myth and legend.
He smiled, tilting his cheek briefly against the Doctor's hand.
And then it was all business and Jack was grateful for it. "I thought it would be appropriate for Valentine's Day. 1941 is rather romantic, don't you think? After all, it was in 1941 that a pretty blonde girl fell into my arms."
"Only you could see bombs exploding all around you and consider it a good year," the Doctor laughed, holding up a uniform. "What do you think? Could I pull it off?"

"Jack! About time you came home for a visit!"
