One of the coffee shop's usual customers came through the door. Of course, Jack could get all the coffee he wanted for free at home, but it never hurt to support your local coffee shop. When he stepped inside, he smiled when he saw Ianto on one side of the counter and River on the other. The guy with her, Jack didn't recognize. Oh, he was getting a good look over and not for the usual reasons.

Think of Jack as another of River's big brothers.

He kept his smile friendly when he stepped up to the counter. "What does a man have to do to get some service around here?"

"Odd things happen in town," Ianto explained sensibly from behind the counter. "By odd, I mean people turn up from out of their time and far far from home. Though, Jack came here on purpose. He didn't just turn up. Neither did I." Ah, the voice of reason.

"I did!" River beamed up at them, waving a hand gleefully. The girl had so much energy today -- oddly enough -- it was probably a good idea Ianto didn't brew her one of her usual sweet concoctions. You didn't want to see this one on a sugar rush.

Matt looked between the two of them. "What do you mean... turn up? Like, not move here? That's, uh." He paused, looking at Jack in the eye for a moment as he thought. "That's weird," Matt conceded, but he didn't sound completely disbelieving now. Just... halfway or so.

"All three of you just... turned up? Uh."

Ianto shook his head a bit. "River turned up. Jack moved here on a .. space.. ship. Well. Spacetime. Mainly time." The conversation was starting to get away from him, Ianto could feel it. It was going to turn into something odd and possibly involve flailing. "I arrived on an airplane in the ordinary way."

Matt nodded slowly, licking his lips and looking at each of them in turn. This should have been mentioned on the town's website. Or by one of his online friends. Or something. Was there something in the water that made people crazy? Shit, was this coffee made from that water? Or what if it was straight out of the coffee beans, what if it was that crazy ass poutine he had eaten yesterday, this was all some big conspiracy --

"Oh."

"Not crazy." River nudged Matt in the arm with an elbow. She most certainly didn't like the way he was dealing with this. "Don't think that."

Matt didn't mean to, but he twitched away slightly from her touch, then bit his lip and eyed her thoughtfully. "I --" Maybe he shouldn't ask what she meant, because he had been thinking that and, hell, if they were coming from the future or just coming from nowhere, why couldn't they read his mind? Aw, fuck. "Sorry. You know, it's just. Not really what I would've expected. At all." Matt laughed nervously.

"There's a lot to get used to in Aternaville. Just one warning. Keep clear of the mayor."

Jack wouldn't go into too much detail. Not with River there. He couldn't quite keep hold of his dislike of Mayor Saxon, though.

Matt looked up from the floor he had been busy examining. "I don't even, uh, know the mayor's name. But okay?" He sipped his coffee again, looking thoughtful and a bit distracted.

"It's a lot to swallow, I know. And most of us tend to come from odd backgrounds, making this easier to accept. If you want proof, pick a nice day and go down to the airfield. Look in the hanger. You won't find biplanes in there." Three vipers and a weird airship lived in that building.

Ianto nudged the cup of coffee in Jack's direction, curious to see what he'd think of it.

River felt a wash of unease and sour displeasure, expression curdling as her lips pressed into a tight line. "He's gotten better," she muttered at the ground before accusingly kicking at the tiles. Ianto and Jack may have regarded the Master with hatred, but River saw in him the potential of what he once was. And liked it. (On occasion.)
