I'd update this journal with some photos I've taken of our House of Beige, as has been requested, but since we're still on dialup the upload speed to a web photohosting service is so slow as to be unmanageable.

lengthy details concerning my current circumstances, and life in Canberra )

canberra, migration, banal raconteurism, social life, work

I think they will; my problem is geographical shock, which will pass.

It's actually rather beautiful here. It's not flat, instead there are rolling lightly wooded hills which dominate the skyline in various directions from where I live. Everything is well organised. There is an unfortunate preponderance of suburbs which were built in the 70s and 80s, during our nadir of architectural taste, but these suburbs are also filled with stunning trees. The amount of birdlife is extraordinary.

There are also quite a few interesting sights which I haven't gotten around to investigating yet.

Emotionally, of course, the big issue is the long distance to all the people I normally hang out with. Luckily I have net acquaintainces who I barely know in real life to comfort me - thanks for that *smile*

I guess it's easy to underestimate the social value of the workplace. Are there even any decent coffee shops or cafes you could sit and work in?

There's some stuff down at the local shops I might be able to use at some point. But to be honest I'm not normally that social at work, so it may not be as much a factor as you might think.

On another topic, where does your user pic come from?

It's a self portrait by Wyndham Lewis, the leader of the Vorticist art movement.

I have actually found canberra to be quite pleasant the three times I've been there (one doesn't really count though, so really two times). Then again, I haven't been facing the prospect of living there for god-knows-how-long. The relative proximity to the other major cities appeals to me (a lot). It's on my list of 'places I'm looking for work' so who knows...

Good to hear you're both safe and sound, even if not settled in yet. Wish I'd been able to see you before you left :(

It's very pleasant. That's almost the problem. I agree on the wishing of the seeing. I literally had no chance the last week, except to hope you might be at Michal's poker night (had to cancel all other social engagements).

Here's to you getting a job in Canberra ... on a lighter note I just went out with the IP Australia people and for some reason they seemed like your type of crowd. Nice people anyway.

have you been to central? (no idea if it has a name other than that.. its the equivelant of "town" in Perth)

sorta a cross between the arcades and malls of town and a shopping center. lots of cool little boutiquey type shops out the back (where the "back" is the part where starbucks is)

if you like arty and mueseumy stuff there are so many great places to go to, of course probably only worth going twice a year (or however often they change their exhibits)

no idea about the luna equivelant though.

still can't believe they don't have yellow traffic lights. it's SO WRONG

good to see you're finally (starting to get/)getting sorted out :)

Thanks - actually I've been using that part of my brain (the part that thinks poetically about loneliness and the ills of social interaction) rather a lot, but it always likes a workout ;-)
