Up until about 10 years ago I didn't really have cable (except for that period Shaw didn't realise they didn't stop service when I bought the house ), and I dont use it very much for that purpose.
Primarily we wanted a nice-ish TV to watch our movies. My favourite thing was actually buying a Raspberry Pi and making a Kodi box out of it using OpenElec. Anything we find a need to watch generally ends up on our media server made out of an old Pentium II with big drives.
By doing that we also save a stack on buy the "dumb" version of the TVs.
Funny thing about flat screen TV's... they're thin enough you can "try them out" by putting them in front of the old tube TV. Which then spends its next several years hiding behing the flat screen TV.
...just like the flat screen monitor hides the old tube monitor on the desk.
