We have a Saturn too and I love it. 2006 Saturn Ion named Megatron. This car was exactly everything we wanted in a car. You're right some of the other models are really hideous but I hope Saturn gets bought out. I have always loved their cars.
There is one thing to consider, many parts are available from aftermarket companies. Almost any part (That typically fails on a car) likely has an aftermarket version which is often cheaper than OEM parts (sometimes similar quality, sometimes not). Then there are junkyards which as long as there are Saturns around will be stocked with Saturn parts.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. There are TOO many GM cars on the road and $$ for parts suppliers that there shouldn't be any worry for repairs.
EDIT: Oh, I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup which i want to keep going for a while myself.
True about the parts. I should have clarified one of my concerns, though. In the US, the manufacturers have to give their computer code books to independent mechanics - in Canada they do not. If it's a computer problem, you HAVE to go to the dealer. :/
There's a NPD MP who has proposed a bill to change that, so hopefully it won't be like that for much longer.
Whatever happens to GM, parts should continue to be available. They are often produced independently of GM by third party companies. As long as the cars are on the road, there will be parts for them. SL1s were quite popular, which is another good sign for parts availability. So no worries for you. :) I might be concerned if I was still under warranty, whether that would continue to be fully honored.
I think Saturn sold many good, sharp cars. I was looking at the rebadged Opel Astra as one of my top choices, but it didn't have enough torque for my liking. I also like the Saturn Sky, despite some of its reliability concerns.
We would have looked harder at the Saturn Sky if it had come with a hardtop option, but we were really concerned with the reliability issues. The fact that it only came with a soft top totally nixed it off our list.
