So, on Wednesday I went and questioned whether there was any way for me to get a shift that was a bit more consistent... Considering my senority with the company (if not the department) and my reliability for always coming in on time. My new boss (former coworker) was very sympathetic, and agreed that I was pretty much the most reliable person there: if I didn't come in, it was a freakin' emergency. (It was nice that someone noticed.) He said he'd see what he could do.
Well, I overheard a part of the call he had with someone else regarding the schedule. When he said he'd see what he could do, the cynical part of me was sure that he was just saying that to get me to go away. But when I actually heard him extolling my excellent attendance and saying that I should absolutely be given a more consistent shift - just for fairness (no one else had a schedule that was as irregular as mine was going to be) - I felt a lot better. And, after a few days, the new schedule was published, and I am on the same shift as usual: 6am-2:30pm all the time, even on weekends (since the guy who coopted my morning Saturday shift, moving me to 10:00am shifts on the weekend, is now the boss).
Woot!
It's interesting that when I first started working this shift, my coworkers were sympathetic for the "horrible" shift that I was given. But after a while, they realized that I was able to bugger off at 2:30pm, and still had the whole day ahead of me. When I took vacation they actually didn't have any trouble filling my shift... And when they decided to shuffle around the work schedules, lots of people bid on that 6am shift.
Of course, I think our friends still think
plonq and I are crazy for going into work at 6am every day, but we're so used to it now. I'm still not a morning person (never will be, I think), but this is 100% perferrable to going in at a different time every single morning.
Anyway, I'm no longer on the verge of quitting. (Sorry, Pierre.) I'll stick it out for a bit longer. And as far as all of the management quitting... I don't think the company is on the verge of collapse or anything. And even if it is, I don't mind riding a sinking ship down. It sure makes the employment insurance application a lot easier to fill out. :)
