A hot topic in the belly dance world

Or at least it seems to be for those who dance improv style of tribal.

I was "wandering" around the web and I kept hearing that Carolena Nericcio was now saying that you cannot use the term "American Tribal Style" (ATS) to talk about a style of belly dance unless you are specifically talking about the moves approved by her under Fat Chance Belly ( Read more... )

tribal, fcbd, bellydance, ats

It's so confusing. I think that it would be nice to have some kind of defination. I mean, some people do nothing close to "tribal dance" and just call it ATS. However, I think if you only do "ATS approved moves" then your troupe would get boring after time. We do ATS moves, but we also do african dancing, folkloric dancing, and so one and I like that we have variety, so I suppose we would not be approved by FCBD.

Nope. From what I read, you would have to have a new move submitted for approval.

From what I've been given to "understand" to be Tribal (as opposed to Tribal Fusion) you need to dance with a Tribe. And before all this that I've stumbled upon, "American Tribal Style" meant specifically dancing group improv.

That's why we ascribe to the "improv tribal style," or ITS, label. Since our moves are not strictly FCBD, Gypsy Caravan, or Black Sheep, and we've made up some stuff along the way pulled from AmCab and Egyptian dance, but we do perform in an improv, tribal format.

Carolena can keep her ATS label. :-)

Let's just home someone like Unmata (who I think goes under "ITS") doesn't claim that for their own. ;)

feh..labels labels labels.
Before this, I thought tribal didn't have the "fights" that Am Cab vs Egyptian did. And where does fusion go to far from bellydance to be called bellydance? We all seem to love to argue over labels.

On a related note: Whereas, I , have no idea what label to give myself.
RIght now I think I am "2 parts Am Cab, 2 parts goth, 1 part turkish, 1 part tribal, shake vigorously....very vigorously"
