I'm of the mind that the Fast Worker, the Indian unique unit, is probably the most useful unit in any game where you aren't focusing completely on military matters. You get them right off the bat and they never become obsolete. They work at 150% capacity compared to a normal worker and they have a much longer movement. The extra speed comes in extremely handy in the beginning of the game when you need to build farms and pastures to boost your city population, and then again later for connecting all your cities via roads.

They're nice, but the problem is that you have to play Indians to get them, and that means having Spritual as one of your traits (useless.)

Additionally, while that extra movement seems nice at the start, once you have roads (and later, railroads) it's really not that great.

Far better, IMO is getting any combination of Expansive, Financial, and Creative. Catherine (Russia, Cre/Fin), Cyrus (Persia, Exp/Cre), Caesar (Rome, Exp/Cre), or Victoria (England Exp/Fin) are all good for this, allowing you to have a fast-growth, high-money empire. Additionally, most of them (with the exception of Cyrus) have really good unique units.

Have you tried the multiplayer online yet? It's much better than playing against the AI.
