I spent some of last summer helping my former employer study a potential climate monitoring architecture (space & ground). They are in the satellite business, so you can guess how that answer came out.

Climate monitoring satellites are cheap to build too, since you know they will be distroyed on launch. You don't even have to test them... ;-)

I have often why scientists did not propagate the environment forward from say, initial conditions in 1900, based on their model of choice. I have no doubt that the environment is changing, but the natural component versus the man-made one is a challange.
