Continuing A Current Trend...

For reasons that do not bear getting into at this juncture, I seem to have kinda-sorta agreed to write some Harry Potter fic. Or at least a ficlet, anyway. So, um, have some angsty Snape/McGonagall, I guess!

I would like that a lot, were it not for one thing. I had the strong impression from the books that those two couldn't stand each other, even in the early books, and so I just can't believe in them as lovers. (Mind you, it's more plausible than what seems to be the commonest pairing in Potterfic, i.e. Snape and Hermione. :)

Huh, I never got that sense at all. They certainly snark and banter and compete a lot, but they both seem like the kind of people who are likely to enjoy that sort of interaction. I think, honestly, she's about the only person in the books I can successfully imagine him with. They have some of the same kind of sharpness about them at times, I think, although of course hers is a hell of a lot less bitter.

Snape/Hermione I've never understood. Talk about two people who really can't stand each other... Mind you, from my admittedly very marginal experiences with Potter fandom, I think the commonest pairing is Snape/Harry, which... Well, it's certainly interesting, I guess. But often not in the good way. :)

:)

It may be that my memory of the books isn't to be relied on when it comes to Snape/MacGonagall. It's pretty poor nowadays.

Mine would be, too, if I hadn't started re-reading the series lately. (I just finished book 4.) There's actually not much interaction between them in those early books. Well, hell, there's not really all that much of either of them, period. I think the closest I've seen to them disliking each other is her being annoyed with him for rubbing it in when the Slytherins win at Quidditch. Which may well be more the sort of thing that happens with your friends than your enemies. :)

I have a fair idea who put you up to that. :-)

I like it! And that last line is just so poignant.

Poignant is definitely what I was aiming for. :)

Whatever convinced you to write Potterfic - I'm going to assume it was blackmail - we should all be grateful that someone had something incriminating on you. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I have something stuck in my eye. *sniffle* :)

This thing made me a little sniffly while I was writing it, I have to admit. :)

Snape/McGonagall is my favorite het pairing, and I think you do a fabulous job with them. It's hard to believe you don't consider yourself an HP person, because you've really nailed their characters. Once you get past the age difference, they really have a lot in common, and canon leaves the door open for the possibility of at least MMSS friendship.

I like way you deal with "professionalism" -- of course that would be important to McG. And of course they'd both have that hard edge, Snape in particular, that would make them unsentimental in the best and worst of ways. You've captured just the sense of understatement that I think it essential to the pairing.

So thanks for posting and for letting me barge in to comment, and I hope this won't be your last foray into the glories of Snape/McGonagall.

Hello! And thanks! I've had the pairing evangelized at me a bit, which helps. :)

I will admit, the age difference struck me as slightly problematic at first, but, really, I got over that quickly. The idea that women above a certain age can't be sexual beings is an annoying and mistaken one, after all, and... Well, to put it crudely, a guy like Snape doesn't necessarily have a lot of scope to be picky when it comes to the shallow physical details even if he were inclined to. And given his deep-seated intolerance of fools, I can't really imagine him prioritizing youth and hotness over an ability to trade intelligent snark, at least not in anybody he was planning to spend much time with.

And I'm a big fan of understatement. :)

But whether there will ever be more... I don't know. I'm a little surprised that this one happened.
