Season Number Six

I'm still feeling ooky, so I'm spending today lying on the sofa -- again -- watching The Prisoner. The original version, that is. I'd never seen the whole thing and am now watching it straight through, which seems to be far and away the best way to do it. This has to be one of the weirdest shows ever to appear on television, but, lo, it is a ( Read more... )

lost, the prisoner

The Prisoner for the motherfucking win. It's pretty heavy stuff, isn't it? You don't really see that kind of intelligent television much these days. Even though the very braininess of it is what makes it difficult to rewatch, because it is, well, heavy. But still bloody amazing.

It really is just amazingly smart and subtle and layered. I don't think I ever quite appreciated that before, because I never really had much of a chance to watch it carefully. And it expects you to just get it, without any hand-holding. I'm frankly amazed it ever got made in the first place.

(I have no Prisoner icons, which I think is a thing I may have to rectify, so here's another sekrit agent type from 1967, instead. :))

Yes! I really appreciate how it expects you to have brains and to *get* all that stuff. And if you don't even know what individualism is, you wouldn't understand it. My dad took one look at it and said "that makes no sense, its just silly" when he saw the human chess pieces. It was too absurd and symbolic for him. (It's ironic, considering he looks like Number Six.)

And ooh, Emma! I must find some nummy icons her, I simply must. And try and keep my Jason King one from trying to flirt with her too much. (Oh, did you get to the ep where Wyngarde was Number Two? He was one of the best Number Twos.)

The first couple of brief encounters I had with it, I have to admit, I thought it was just kind of silly, too. Surrealism for the sake of surrealism, that sort of thing. And, of course, it's not at all. It's very deliberate about its themes, and very effective at conveying them, too. But I had to start watching it from the beginning to get an inkling of that. I got a handful of episodes in, that time, but I was watching it with a bunch of other people, and it was very distracting. This time, watching it properly, I'm seeing all kinds of great stuff in it that kind of went past me before. It's terrific.

I'm not sure. *checks* Oh, OK, apparently that was the chess one. I do remember now. :)

And number 108! That's the sum, and the maximum number of minutes they could leave between pressing the button. (And a lot of other things, Lost being what it is.)

And I want to read this.

I think I want to read it, too. Sadly, there's no way I'm competent to write it. :)

That reminds me, I saw the pilot of that show and really wanted to see more. Now I have something to do, at some point when I actually have free time!

I assume you mean The Prisoner, rather than Lost? I recommend it highly, I really do.

Lost has lost me.
