Drabble the Ninth
See! I said I hadn't forgotten! This one's for kerravonsen, who wanted the 8th or 9th Doctor and the Brigadier. I went for the latter, though hopefully you can tell that. Gen. Vague spoilers for a certain Third Doctor ep, I suppose. (And can I just say: I badly need a Brigadier icon.)
Veteran
"You know," said the Doctor, "you've been a good friend, all through the years."
"I try to do my part," he said. The warmth and affection in his voice were sincere, but something about this new Doctor unnerved him a little.
"Mind you, there's one thing that always bothered me. I've been thinkin' about it lately, for some reason. And I just wanted to say... I forgive you. For the Silurians. I think I understand it now."
That, he suddenly realized, was the difference. This Doctor had a soldier's eyes.
All he could think of to say was, "I'm sorry."
