Haha, yeah, I was staring at that patch of ice and actually had to take a minute to figure out how to get through. Another paddler came along on his kayak and I was like, great, he's got a massive boat, I'll let him get out before me so he can break the ice. Alas, he was getting out elsewhere.
Previous me couldn't have imagined it either as I'm more for hot temperatures, but with the right clothes it's really fine. The only part of me that's not comfortably warm are my feet... My neoprene boots are quite cozy as long as it's a few degrees above freezing, but ice cold water is pretty extreme. That's why I limit my time on the water to 90 mins at the moment, so I won't cool out.
The only time I feel actually cold is afterwards, while waiting for the bus. As soon as you stop moving the cold sinks in.
