If you like poetry, then I would say go ahead and take the poetry class. Never mind if your friends don't enjoy it and don't encourage you ;)
Personally, I probably wouldn't take a poetry class (or any kind of writing class, to be honest) because...well, I never have, but I think I can produce decent stuff sometimes.
I don't see how it would work. If they're going to teach you about fixed poetry forms, you could just look that up yourself...and if it's about free verse with no real rules, then I don't think that can really be taught. It's very subjective, anyway.
But I've never taken a writing class, so I could be wrong :)
Haha no, I haven't decided yet! I'm putting it off until the Spring.
And you're right, you can't really teach poetry, but it's probably more of a workshop thing where your classmates(including the professor) read your work and critique it. At least, that's how it works in my other creative fiction classes :)
Poetry is subjective, but sometimes feedback from others can at least tell you whether or not your work made sense and was successful at achieving it's artistic purpose.
But alas, I won't worry about taking until next Spring. Are you done with your semester as well?

I see what you mean about getting critique and feedback in the poetry class...that sounds quite neat, actually.
