Okay, what am I missing now? I stayed away from LJ for another few weeks and came back today to catch up on my friends page ( Read more... )

The friends page only goes back two weeks but you can make LJ show your friends' posts for any specific day you like. The format for the URL to do that is http://.livejournal.com/friends/?date=YYYY-MM-DD . So if you want to see posts from Jan 30, you'd go to http://astrelsa.livejournal.com/friends/?date=2013-01-30 . Doing it that way is annoying, but far less annoying than having to look at each journal if you have a bunch of friends.

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that LJ is trying to drive everybody away to Dreamwidth. Dreamwidth still does everything the way I like, sometimes even better than LJ did even before they started changing everything.

Thank you, Katrina! As you say, annoying but not so much so as going to each journal.

Is this something that has just started happening, or has it always been this way?

I certainly agree that it appears LJ is trying to drive us away. It seems to be working quite well. Personally I don't have the heart to 'start over' at Dreamwidth but I certainly understand why anyone would want to.

I think the two weeks thing started within the past couple months. You used to be able to go back 999 entries. I'm pretty sure that it didn't matter how far back that way.

If you want to switch to Dreamwidth, you don't have to start over. Dreamwidth will import your LJ account, user pictures, comments and all, if you tell it to do so. It will also crosspost to LJ if you want to post to both places. You do have to set up your journal style and settings again but there are a lot of styles to choose from even for free accounts.
