It was hard to watch Matsujun struggle as the One Ring burned his skin. Showise had followed Matsujun all the way from the Shire, and finally Mount Doom was in sight.

"I wish there'd been another way into Mordor," Showise said sadly as he and Matsujun cuddled for warmth in a small alcove carved into the obsidian rock of the mountain. "I wish you hadn't had to struggle so, Mr. Matsujun."

"It's alright," Matsujun replied, his voice scratchy from the One Ring's theft of his life force. He stared at the glittering item, the way it sparkled against his pale finger. "I'm not sure if I'll have the strength to throw it into the fires of the volcano, Showise."

"I'm here," Showise responded, curling his chubby hobbit fingers around Matsujun's increasingly narrow waist. It hurt him just as much to watch his dearest friend wither away before him as it hurt Matsujun to bear the ring's heavy burden. "I'm here. I will help you."

A tear rolled down Matsujun's cheek. "I've always been your biggest supporter, Showise. I couldn't do this without you."

Matsujun turned, and Showise felt his heart pitter pat in his chest. His stomach was rumbling - they'd missed second breakfast and they were nearly out of elven bread. But his heart was pitter patting for a far different reason.

Showise felt the ring burn against his cheek as Matsujun stroked his face. "Thank you, Showise. For being here."

He blushed from the attention. "We should rest. The journey ahead is still arduous."

Showise was just about to place a kiss on the tip of Matsujun's nose when they heard a few rocks tumble at the opening to their alcove. He sprung to his feet, holding out his shortsword. He stood in front of Matsujun, protective as always.

"Show yourself! I won't let you get to Mr. Matsujun!"

There was a quiet laugh as the figure approached. "Yes. Yes, we wants it. We needs to have it, yes."

Showise tightened his grip on the sword. "I said show yourself or I'll get you!"

The person stepped into the light and smiled. He'd followed them - the blasted creature had followed them all the way into Mordor! Matsujun put a hand on Showise's shoulder. "It's okay, Sho. Nigol won't harm us."

Nigol, the impish fiend who had tried again and again to steal Mr. Matsujun's One Ring was back. Why did Mr. Matsujun trust him? Showise sheathed his weapon and sighed. "We'll see about that."

Nigol just laughed. "Yes, it's good to see the hobbitses again. Great success."
