It was Jun who was supposed to take her. It was Jun who had promised. He doesn’t even know why he agreed since this was something he never ever ever ever EVER wanted to do. She seems equally dubious about him being her partner for it.

“I’ll go first, Mao-chan,” he says as they get strapped into the protective gear.

“That’s probably the best,” she replies, and they’re both trying not to look over the bridge’s rail to the canyon below. Bungee jumping - yeah, Jun, this was a great plan to get her over her fear. At least if Jun had been here, he could have laughed, been all brave and full of bravado, enough to distract Mao-chan from the reality of plunging several dozen meters without a comfy mat waiting at the bottom.

The staff is waiting, and he knows there’s a line after them. Mao’s looking rather irritated at having to be here with him at all. Man up, Sakurai, he tells himself. Jun trusted you to keep an eye on her.

He wants to scream and cry and complain but she’s looking at him with that “I hate sloping shoulders” kind of face that’s not as cute as her image would suggest. He moves away, gets ready to jump. Her face changes, almost perking up at the fact that he’s actually going to do it.

The plunge into the canyon is not as bad as skydiving. It still sucks, it sucks a lot, and the snap of the bungee cord makes him feel like all his internal organs are rearranging themselves. Mao does her jump too, and they reconvene before heading back to the car. She looks a bit shell-shocked, and Sho feels pretty similar.

“That was a stupid idea,” he mumbles, and she actually laughs.

“You looked really manly,” she tells him as they walk. “Well, until you went over and screamed like a girl.”

“Mao-chan,” he complains before she tugs on the collar of his shirt, pulling him down to her eye level.

“I’m proud of you,” she admits, looking him in the eye. “Jun-kun would have just showed off. But you did this, even though you didn’t want to, because you didn’t want me to go alone.”

He’s at a loss for words when she plants a kiss at the corner of his mouth and scurries away. He finally gets one foot to go in front of another as he makes his way to the car. “But the sloping shoulders…that’s really the problem here?”

“Yep,” she says, but with a wry smile as they get into the car and head back for the city.
