I actually like both theories. Because Loki has proved that he can mimic other people pretty damned well, so he could just as easily make an illusion of Frigga that as accurate down to the last detail.

We're so used to Loki's illusions that we forget that they can come from anywhere else, so when his hands passed through Frigga, my reaction was, "Omigod, she's just his conjuring, he's imagining what he would say to her--! No, wait, she can do that kind of magic too, she's the one who taught him, she's projecting herself because he's in a cell!" So either version takes a little mental leap of the watcher; I agree, it's one of the more subtle moments in the script. (I think either version can be taken from the scene as it plays, though. Though I've seen an excerpt that claims to be from the Thor TDW storybook that indicates it was Frigga sending the conjuring.)

And for the last conversation they had to be him telling her she wasn't his mother, man.
Remember Finding Nemo? And the first thing Nemo says when he's reunited with his dad is, "Dad! Dad, I don't hate you!" And you realize--though Nemo's said NOTHING about this the entire movie--that that little fish has been carrying around the burden of knowing "I hate you" were his last ( ... )

Yeah, I thought myself that Loki had made the illusion of Frigga at first, but talking after decided it was her projection - which I like much better, as I've always seen Frigga as a good enough mother to almost make up for Odin (it explains how Thor could've turned out so well in spite of his dad). Confirmation of that was very nice. (and I'm happily in denial about the rest of Frigga's plotline :P)

The Thor&Loki buddy-cop show is silly but awesome (I would watch it!)

I did read it as her doing it, too, though of course the question remains if they had the same tricks, why does Loki live and not Frigga? Could be a priorities thing--they both wanted to protect Jane, but Loki's first priority was protecting himself, and not so Frigga. (But still! It's not like Thor's ever going to pay the iron price for being a self-sacrificin' dude.)

I felt like I felt watching Brave, actually--that this movie was a combination of two conflicting visions, and one of the visions I would have REALLY LIKED (Frigga protecting Jane with her knives, Jane winking at Thor over magic=science, which shows that Thor likes a science babe because most of the people Thor loves--Frigga and Loki--ARE science babes) and the other (the science... makes a remote control... the Tube... no wait... oh god), well, okay.
