My Facebook Account Was Just Banned For Criticizing Chipotle

Feb 23, 2008 16:36

This is the second time this has happened - the first time I thought, "Oh, this must be some kind of mistake, I'm not going to make a big deal out of this." But hey, this is the second time they've disabled my account in two days after making critical remarks about the Chipotle corporation on their Facebook page:

Every time they ban my account, the comments I've made are removed, which is exactly why they're doing this.

For those of you who don't know, Chipotle used to employ the Immokalee farmworker community to pick their tomatoes. The workers were paid below poverty wages - for example, they'd have to pick 4000 pounds of tomatoes to make around 55 dollars a day. So the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) asked for a 20 cent per bucket raise - not health insurance, not overtime, not sick time, just a raise that'd make it so if they picked TWO TONS of tomatoes a day, they'd get around 95 dollars.

Chipotle's response was to fire them, to no longer use Immokalee labor because it made them look bad. Chipotle, who's slogan is "Food With Integrity", could have simply improved living conditions and wages for the workers. Instead, they dropped them completely.

Do me a favor, go to Chipotle's Facebook Page and write a critical review of Chipotle. Leave messages on their wall, help people find out about this. If enough of us weigh in, we might be able to get through to some of the college kids out there, start a movement and actually change some things.

Also, visit The Unofficial Chipotle Day Event and leave a comment on their wall. Help people learn about this.
