The Challenge: charmax Christmas wish! A vid/vidlet of Scully (X-Files). Damn, that woman is hot!
My inner response? Oh that is easy. I can do that… Scully is hot as a thousand suns and would scorch through retina of a blind human-alien-hybrid confronted with her. No fooling around, no digging deeper than the skin, because Charmax wanted a hot Scully vid and then she made the mistake of saying that smart is sexy and everything went downhill from there. Because I agree. xandra-ptv also and Mulder too.
The lesson? Never underestimate the power of self-delusion - because let’s face it: Vidding ain’t easy for me, even with such an undemanding task. Plus pain? - Pretty and there went my resolution to not scratch Scully’s skin and rip Mulder’s heart in shreds.
Reasons to vid ‚Crazy Beautiful’? After reading Charmax wish I started searching for a song that fit the profile of the things I had in mind with this vid. An old-school point of view: Love interest and his object of desire. Simple enough. After all X files was the master of UST and being the fandom that first introduced me to fanvids. So having a million ideas back in the day but none of the abilities to create a vid I thought it would be easy to settle on a song. It wasn’t. I spend the first days randomly playing tracks, when ‘Crazy Beautiful’ came on it instantly clicked as perfect Mulder voice for a straight-forward take on Scully. The song convinced me before rewatching, so I have to say that at this point I hadn’t seen the series in years, still there were plenty of scenes that right away flashed in my mind. In fact an amazing collection for the years passed.
Lyrical interpretation: There’s a difference to work out between having a character’s voice and an actual visual to work with. The lyrics are dry, not painting a pretty picture, but a strong one. The underlying frustration of the first words sold me, because Scully presence is a constant irritation in Mulder’s life. She demands facts. She accepts or rejects Mulder’s theories based on evidence. Her scientific integrity keeps him grounded; still her faith in god is one Mulder cannot share. She’s crazy beautiful in her perspective of life.
So starting off with her cross in his hand not only represents the bridge that something unexplained is out there or blind faith or a part of herself. It also stands for their daily struggle - ‘a splinter in [his] thumb’ - without it his whole being aches in her absence. So we start with Mulder searching for her and the truth and faith and we end on a nameless cemetery with her finding him, because I like my metaphors full circle, even when my beta doesn’t agree on the end. That I could come up with lengthy explanation for pretty much all my scene choices speaks for my rekindled love for this series, at least I sucked Xandra right back into it and we share our comfortable place in yet another hell.
The Jounney? Endless X-file-marathons. The usual indecision over scene choices. Some beta-harassment in form of desperate run-on sentences over half a page in denying the use of later seasons. In-depth discussion of Mulder’s ‘C’mere, please, just fuck me senseless!’-face while listening to Scully’s explanations on various occasions. Being on the receiving end of the harassment. The repeated phrase, ‘I never accomplish anything while being on IM with you, Bitch!’ The revelation of not being crucified for the scene choices expected, because they’re so fucking shallow. The surprise of being tortured for others. Getting annoyed over vidding in 4:3 because it’s been ages and it just looks boring. Getting pissed for sticking to the first seasons, because remember that scene from... Yeah, like fifty times!
Technical notes worth mentioning? Actually none, there aren’t any fancy effects in this vid and I’m certain to never ever vid in 4:3 again. It’s odd how restrictive it feels.
Dedication? Obviously for Charmax for being so incredibly talented in so many art resorts that she constantly takes my breath away with her ‘Crazy beautiful’ results and makes me question my own lax work ethics. Now, didn’t that sound professional? So let’s get down to the truth, she blows my mind with every vid and artwork she creates and I want to kill her for being so goddamn good and worship her in the same instant. That’s an amazing talent right there. I also love her too damn much to ever do her any harm, but that isn’t a secret.
I also own Xandra a big thanks for holding my hand - which equals in xf-terms a lot of pity fucks - through this babe here, the vid wouldn’t be the same without your insight and your serene calm while I vented my heart out. There was name-calling involved and ignoring good advice to just humble back to it later and she didn’t even mock me much for it. So thank you for letting me have my way with you, when I thought there was no way in hell I could finish this on time. But that’s the reason why you rule our hell dimension, when I’m on my knees.
