For casual sewers, depending on your budget, London Drugs has machines for quite reasonable. I think their current flier has a redone brother for $89.99. My sister bought a singer there for 99.99 four or five years ago, and it's still going fairly strong -- she used it for sewing for consignment for much of that time, including med. weight vinyl. The machine is currently being used by a newbie scaer for making her first sets of garb. It's got a lot of wear for a hundred bucks! And I like singeR more than brother:)

Wow, London Drugs does sell everything. I think I'll take mine in first to check if it can be fixed and then have to see what to do if it comes close to the cost of a new cheap on. I do have a serger so it's not dire to have a good sewing machine. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, totally. I want a working serger so badly! I have this one I bought for $20 at the thrift store, but it needs servicing soooo badly, as the tension is too screwy for me to fix on my own, but I'm afraid how much it'll cost. It's a babylock, so at least it's a common brand. It's just such a hassle to have to go to my parents' and use my sister's when I want to serge something, as it's usually in the middle of a project.

I'm also often amazed by things I loose for no apparent reason, then find again for no apparent reason???
Glad you have yours back.

what brand is your sewing machine?

there is a Pfaff repair shop on Granville near Broadway
and a Singer repair shop on Kingsway near my place (Gilley)

I have a Singer from the 70s

So my sister is over right now and she tells me that she bought an impulse pfaff that she hasn't used since. She bought it directly from the person who serviced it (who ran a machine-servicing business), it worked fine then. It's apparently the most feature-filled version that you could get before they started electric ones. She has the manual and it's in a case. $80-$100 is what she's going to be putting it on Craigslist for (which is how much servicing machines can often cost, especially the better ones). So let me know if you're interested, it'll definitely be more durable than the london drugs ones!

And she also wants to know if your bubble gum pink one is a kenmore, cuz she has a 1963 baby blue one that she's looking for parts for....
