Well, the right-wing preachers are getting their congregations all riled up to vote; I wish the left had that much passion. Not mindless extremism, but enough anger to get off their asses and vote. I always vote absentee.
Hey you need to check out the post below this one--I address you specifically b/c of your specialized knowledge. :-) The Sunnydale library post.
Ah, yes. I saw earlier. I clicked on the link, then hurried with the back button. I am at work right now, at the super-conservative library in which I work at. I'll check it out when I get home.
From my European POV, the US government seems to get scarier every day. Sadly, I don't think that the next elections will change much, as I can't see a clear win for one party nor the other.
I think the two-party system guarantees that things don't change much b/c it all mushes toward the middle. My ex-husband keeps proselitizing (sp?) about how we need a parliamentary government, and I think he's right. Fat chance it'll ever happen though.
I know Nixon was the devil incarnate, but the devil is just a construct of the Christian patriarchal religion of the late Roman period to early Middle ages...and sometimes next to the true eBil ShruB, Mr. Debil from Yorba Linda seems like he was a saint. Or at least a rather benign smarmy Senior Partner

I love this icon by dragonladych, and it seemed appropriate. She does political cartoons using sheep; however it's Switzerland she's commenting on, and they're in French

All religions are social constructs from the same deep bioligical need for meaning. I could go on about what I believe, but suffice it to say, everybody, every scripture etc. tries very hard to describe Gid/TPTB etc. and does their best to do so. Like the Indian dudes with the elephant, they get close to some parts, leave out others, and rightly give the Goddess a few indescribable bits as well.
It's just that I don't think any of Them Up There, want people to fight and kill over the differences, because they "contain multitudes" and have plenty of room for every opinion about their nature.
And now the right honorable pRes wants us to stay there til...? Of course, some of the LOTR liberal fen might be right-- Frodo didn't destroy the ring- you-know-who has it!
I like the idea of an updatd version of La Convivencia in Moorish era Spain. It wasn't a perfect system, but certainly we can evolve from 2 tired class system to something more inclusive...and not include merely the People of the Book, but People of the Earth.
Social constructs or metaphors. Wm. Blake's version was that inspired poets came up with stories that basically anthropomorphized nature--sea gods, river gods, etc--thus giving the human imagination a connection w/ nature, but eventually priests came along and said that the gods had told them these things, thereby rigidifying them into dogma. For Blake religion at its best was the imaginative creation of individuals: "I must create my own System lest I be enslav'd by another man's." And at its worst it was a method of oppression and control used by those in authority to keep poor people in their place: "Yeah, your life sucks, but just wait until the afterlife which will be really groovy!" to which the logical answer is "But if your life is really groovy, how come you get a groovy afterlife too?"
Frodo can't possibly have destroyed the ring; the Dark Side of the Force keeps coming back.
I think that the only thing that I have seen politically lately that amazed me is the xtains calling for a total and complete investigation of ex-congressman childmolester...
It's an election thing. They want people to know that Xtians don't tolerate that sort of thing and will do anything to root out the evil in gov't, etc.
