No, obsessing is all right. I think as an English professor (even a retired one), it's quite normal and even good. What kind of teacher would you be if you didn't love what you taught? It's like literarture classes. We have an author, we read stories by him or her, and the class discusses--bringing up different views and perspectives on the stories. I mentioned this in reply to your comment in one of my journal posts, it's the same for fans of a series/movie/whatever. We come together as a fan community and analyze our favorite fandom. With the different views and fanfictions, we may see things we didn't see before and now can look at the series in a new way therefore making it new all over again. Just because you've retired from teaching English doesn't mean you've lost your natural curiosity to all possible views and perspectives on a certain piece. If you just watched the show, came up with your own views, and left it at that, you would miss a whole lot. You never write a paper or academic journal or book without sources. In a way ( ... )

Well, that's true enough. Obviously we discuss authors who have been dead for lo these many centuries. :-) Actually, what was scary about my book was the part where I was writing about *living* creators--but so far, none of them have told me I was full of shit, and Gaiman *liked* it.

And learning from others is fun when they don't have to be *sources*. I'm just learning, but I'm not having to *use* it to produce something. It was like the time I "took" English 303 and did all the work. I didn't need it for anything, and I had *no intention* of ever teaching it myself. I just wanted to learn it.

For me the fanworld is the ultimate escapism. I read an article once where the writer suggested that daydreaming is like taking a mini vacation without actually going anywhere. I take a vacation every time I get on a bus or train. I can actually put myself in BtvS mode (or CSI at the moment) whenever I catch myself mulling on and on about distressing things in my life. I can do this because I'm emotionally involved in those worlds and their people ( ... )

It's funny--and quite useful--that my shrink is a Buffy fan. We can talk about Buffy and it's a convenient shorthand into atara's head, and he knows what I'm getting at--probably more than *I* know what I'm getting at. :-)

Now I don't know about you, but I don't particularly care about the actors behind the characters. I know they're there and I think they're doing a bang-up job and would probably ask for an autograph if I ever ran into one, but it wouldn't make my day. Same here, for the most part. Now, if I think an actor is doing a marvelous job in something, I might want to see her/him in something else, but I obsess over *characters*. I'll admit that meeting Patrick Stewart was a thrill b/c he's always magnificent in whatever role he plays, he's smart, and he's a gentleman to his fans. I'll be sad if an ( ... )
