"Real" firefighter

My son recently had a discussion with his father (my evil ex) about weather or not his mom was/is a "real" firefighter. I also recently got into this arguement with a drunk guy at work that left me fuming.

Of course I am a real firefighter! I wear a pager, take shifts, have personalized turnouts and a hook with my name on it. I belong to the Echo

I'd be pissed too! What a prick! Why would anyone think you're not a "real" firefighter? And what's the difference between a "real" one and not real one? Absurd!

The ignorant can sometimes believe if you are not a "career" firefighter then you are not a real firefighter. In our smaller communities we have a handful of people that work at the hall around the clock for many reasons including duty officer. Maybe a "real" firefighter works in the city? I think most feel that a real firefighter is a paid one.
