As a person currently in an interracial relationship, I obviously approve of them--but I would venture to say that, in mainstream media, Will Smith is right to suggest that African American characters tend to get paired off with members of other races. On Scrubs, we have Turk and Carla; on Heroes, there's DL and Niki; on Lost, Michael's wife was some race that I can't readily identify (and am not frankly interested in trying to), not to mention Sayid and Shannon's relationship (although he's not African, but Arab); in Hitch, Will Smith's character fell in love with a Hispanic woman, and in I, Robot, a Caucasian woman; I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy, but that seems to pair an Asian woman and an African American man; I could easily find you loads of other examples. And on Psych, Gus and Shawn get called a couple all the time. I'm just not witnessing that 'relentless pairing off' of minorities about which you speak
( ... )
Well, that's certainly heartening! I must admit, my experience with television is for the most part limited to wandering into the living room while my sister is watching them, and she doesn't watch...well, very good television shows. So it's great to here that the trend doesn't persist everywhere.
And, of course, congratulations to you and your girlfriend, and I hope your relationship continues as wonderfully as it seems to be now. :)
Ooh, what sorts of things? Now you've piqued my O_o-ish curiosity. ^___^;;;
It's been a year now since the first time I met her in person--I don't know how long we've been together, really, but we were rather infatuated then, and we said that we loved one another shortly after. So I still sort of think of this time as an anniversary-time. ^___^
I notice quite a few mixed-race couples on UK television, particularly in shows reflecting how diverse major cities here are.
But the thing I really love is that in real life, I'm beginning to notice them around Belfast, too. For a long time immigration was barely happening because of the Troubles and the population was largely homogenous; now the it's getting so much more diverse. I remember the day I first saw a black guy and an Asian girl together in the city centre and realised that we were turning a corner. Now I look forward to the day when we just won't notice, because it'll be that common.
