These prompts are so much fun. You have me thinking about Madame de Tourvel again. Clearly I am long overdue for a reread of Les Liaisons. ;)

Yes, it is exciting, isn't it? And it sort of pulls the way that most everyone gets both of them wrong into sharper focus.

Anne, of course, gets bitter, which Tourvel never does, but Anne has the politics interwoven with everything, whereas Tourvel just has Merteuil who, while she may seem as baffling as War of the Roses politics, does not, it must be acknowledged, have quite the same effect.
