In an odd conjunction of events, I have just borrowed the dvd of Caligari from the library to watch it again for the first time in about 5 years.

And also a weird audio play of Caligari which both confuses and intrigues me. Because, how does that really work without the visuals?

If you can, go see Theater Mitu's production DR.C (Or How I Learned To Act In Eight Steps)..

The artistic director of the company and director of this production, Ruben Polendo, is one of my teachers. He's absolutely brilliant. I will say that his company's work is not for everyone. He did an abstracted production of Death of a Salesman earlier this year that people either loved or hated. I loved it. He's very influenced by Eastern theatre traditions (we did a lot of Noh, Butoh, and Kathakali exercises in his class), and studies theatre traditions all over the world from masters of their crafts.

I don't know much about this production. I know it has a lot to do with The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. I know it also has a lot to do with putting the texts of different theatre theorists (Stanislavski, Brecht, Brook, etc) in conversation with each other. I also know that this is a really big undertaking for them (which is saying a lot, because they like to do epics). I think it's been in development for about three years ( ... )
