Happy Blood Exchange Day!

Oct 02, 2007 18:28

As some of you may remember from last year, today, October 2nd, is Blood Exchange Day, in honor of the day when, in the novel Dracula, Count Dracula forced Mina Harker to drink his blood. True, it's not really an occasion to rejoice, but holidays are odd things. And shouldn't we take every oppurtunity to celebrate ( Read more... )

Damn! It's 7:30! I don't have time to do like, anything. Plus, I'm babysitting someone who is TERRIFIED of LIFE or something. Or I totally would.
HAPPY BLOOD EXCHANGE DAY! WOOO!

Monologue from the book or from a play? Because that'd be a fun college audition monologue, thinks I...

Next year, I certainly will celebrate it better!
Maybe I can celebrate it by... Listening to the musical soundtrack while I take a shower? No idea. But happy blood exchange day!

You can't watch Dracula movies with the person you're babysitting? Well, I suppose that would be a rather bad thing to do with someone who's terrfied of life.

Book. Though I've been meaning to buy the Liz Lochead play version for ages now... Anyway, I'm really not sure whether it would be a good audition monologue; last time I performed it, I got critiscized by my acting teacher at the time, who said that I "wasn't acting". Which was a ridiculous cticism, but there could be other people who think the same way. And it's long - I cut it down an insane degree, and it's still about three minutes. But it's really effective, and self contained, so...

That works as a celebration! Though it would be even better if you sang along! :D

She's 6.

Hmmm, should look into that one, then. Yeah, 2 minutes is the limit, generally. But self contained monologues are hard. And fun. Blach, I'm sure you were acting.

Of course I will! Though I don't really know the words. Okay,I know the words to The Master Song and whatever song it is that Van Helsing sings. Because they really amuse me. I'll do it, though.

Ah. I see.

I can recommend other, shorter, self contained monologues if you need them! But they're pretty much all from before 1900, aside from the two that I worked on because of the annoying audition where you weren't allowed to do anything classical. My acting teacher's argument was that, because the monologue is describing things in the past, it's not active, and thus isn't acting. Which is ridiculous. But what I really remember about that time is that it took awhile for me to get out of character, so I was still on the edge of a mental breakdown when I was being critiqued, and the teacher thought it was because of what she said...to this day, she still talks to me very carefully, as if I'm going to burst into tears at any moment. It amuses me.

...you have the concept recording, don't you?

10 points for making me smile for the first time today. :)

I saw Melissa Errico perform the blood exchange monologue at one of the book signings, years ago. She did a great job.

I'm proud. :)

Oh, that must have been amazing. I really do love Melissa Errico's Mina, even if I can't forgive her for that description of the blood exchange as "every woman's fantasy". I wish I'd been able to go to one of the book signings - my mom went (quite by accident) to the one where Tom Hewitt and Kelli O'Hara performed "Life After Life", which was how we first got interested in the musical, but I wasn't with her at the time.

Heh. I guess this was a good day for me to start reading the book for the first time then, isn't it? I guess I have good timing.
