Ok, odd post, but I was thinking about the battle of Beersheba, the great charge of the lighthorse, and possibly the last cavalry charge in modern warfare. (Yanni gave me a DVD of the "Lighthorseman" which was pretty cool, and it is depicted in it).
Anyways, the odd thing about the battle is that British and Australian troops had to attack this town

Funny you should mention that, I was just thinking about that film yesterday. It used to be one of my favourites, right up there with El Cid ;)
More uplifitng than Gallipoli...
As far as I can tell, a Lighthorseman's bayonet is substantially bigger than a knife, putting even Mick Dundee's "that's not a knife" knife to shame. My dad' Czech mate once found an antique bayonet in his country barn attic and the damn thing looked terrifying.

I think the main thing is, its still too short(and too light) to swing at people from horseback like you do with a cavalry sword, so you have to dismount or stab at people overhand.
I watched your favorite scene from El Cid the other day Tomas - the end one where he rides out against the Moors. Love that scene.
