They're pretty much unheard of in North Carolina (and Massachusetts, as that's where my study partner is from) which completely baffled me. My roommate (NC-born and raised) has heard of them, but never seen them.

I'm used to the availability of chocolate covered ants, but the bug lollipops I encountered were usually in the context of gag gifts. I have this feeling that the proximity to Mexico and its culture has something to do with bug-eating.

Bug lollipops are just bizarre no matter how you look at them. I can accept people eating bugs as a type of food, but sticking them in candy that you would lick and/or suck on? That's just freaky.

The only place I can think of off the top of my head with bug lollipops is Somis Nut House. I've never seen 'em at Sweet Factory or anyplace mainstream. But that also might be because they scare the begeebus out of me.

Here in Northern California you see the ants, mealworms, and cricket candies regularly
