Snow day!

Jan 10, 2011 07:58

My first day of classes might be delayed due to snow.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the "snow day" thing. Oh, don't get me wrong - I'd appreciate an extra day or two to unpack and get settled in. It's just.... a "snow day?" At my age? Hee!

Enjoy it while you can, after this snow days will just be days where you have free time to get more work done. Also, you should read this comic, it's a pretty accurate representation of what your life will be and is kind of the best thing in the world.

Heh, yes. I love PhDComics.

With as cold as it gets here, I think I'll be a lot like the second comic you posted.

You will learn to love layering and believe me its all about base layers when it comes to staying warm. Exposed skin means very cold dry skin. When you get the base layers right you can wear practically anything. ;)

Definitely been doing the layers - learned that from camping in the desert and from Yosemite. My mom was confused when I bought leggings.

"Don't you already have some?"
"I can wear them under my jeans when it's cold."
"Ohh... Here, buy another one."

Did you take your car in and get it winterized before you left? If not you should ask around for mechanic recommendations and do that soon.

Uh.... winterize?

*does a quick Google*

Well, if winterizing just means fresh oil, new battery, topped off antifreeze, new wipers, and good tire pressure, I'm good. Did all that with my dad before I hit the road. Had to change out a few lights, too. My brakes looked okay, but I should probably change them within a year or so, depending on how hard I'm braking. The mechanic took a look at everything else back in November, so I got new struts and tires were realigned. I've always had an emergency kit; I don't have snow tires but I do have chains; and I don't have 4wd.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

Ya that's pretty much what I meant. I've gotten by without four wheel drive and I bet we get worse snow here than you'll get.
