She's kind of scared of him because he's a very angry man, and about as intimidating as Chiyo-chichi (though he turns fewer colors), but she respects him because he must be a really amazing guy to be in charge of this whole ship. As of now, she'd never question him, because he's the captain and she knows she's kinda spacey.
He's the only superior she has who takes some kind of an interest in her, and she appreciates that he's making her get it together, because she knows she needs it. She's always glad when he finds out about her fail rather than, say, the captain or Hijikata doing it, because while he's severe about it he at least lets her stay on the ship, and this is her life. I don't know that she'd put it in these terms, but he's safe.
Part 2 because I am fail and forgot half of what I was going to say:
It's not just that she likes him, she respects his awesome, like the captain. This of course goes along with the usual fear of screwing up; she doesn't want to disappoint him because she at least feels like he's taken care with her. He's got her loyalty, because she can't really offer him friendship with the distance in their positions (and her tardishness).
She's kind of scared of him because she's seen him threaten seppuku for things she knows she'd screw up at, and she doesn't want to die just yet, :( She mostly just tries to stay out of his way and do her job right so she won't have to die.
She wonders if he's friends with Chiyo's daddy (who she believes takes the form of a large yellow cat-like thing), and thinks it's kinda cool that he's working on the ship. All beavers do is build things, and when one beaver builds a house for the whole family all the others are gonna have to move out and do other stuff~ They could get to be friends.
He's kind of a weird guy, and she doesn't know if she likes how he looks down on her, but he's pretty cool, and he thinks different. She gets it when people think different.
