I've read the first book, and I have the three swedish movies but haven't watched them yet. I was not very nterest in the american version - you are the first person I have heard speak well of it.

Hmmm... I started to watch the Swedish version last night (got about to the point where Blomkvist is looking at photos of the parade), and they're similar. The Swedish Lisbeth is a tad more aggressive, less obviously damaged... Rooney Mara's Lisbeth doesn't meet people's eyes, avoids touch, seems to be trying to disappear most of the time until she's pushed, while Noomi's Lisbeth is more assertive from the start. In the Swedish version Blomkvist's father worked for Vanger, and he knew Harriet as a child, while there's zero family connection in the US version. The rape and retribution scenes are in both films, and not pretty in either, though the US version is a lot more graphic. Blomkvist and Salander get together a bit earlier in the US film, which works for me as I like seeing them interact and the different ways they look at and do things without bouncing the POV around quite so much. Both versions are slick, but slight stylistic differences and editing choices give them different flavors. While I think the Swedish original did ( ... )
