I've finally gotten around to starting George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones - it's way less intimidating as an ebook than as a 720-page paperback. One nice thing is that the episodic nature of the chapter-long POV shifts makes it easy to read in short snatches, so it's good for short breaks at work - the days when I could just curl up and read ( Read more... )

**facepalm**

Jim had to read it about 5 times before it clicked.

Regarding GoT - Will I be able to read it, or will it cross my violence threshold?

Hmm... I'm only about halfway through the book, so I can't answer for the whole thing, but I don't think that what's happened so far is *too* bad, given all the backstabbing and awfulness that is attendant on the maneuvering behind a grab (okay, *several* grabs) for power. Some innocents are slaughtered or maimed, but I don't feel like Martin is reveling in the bloodshed - it's all to demonstrate how nasty some folks are, or how basically good, honorable folks can get left with no good, honorable choices.

I think you'd be okay with it, though... What's Jim's take on how close it comes to crossing your threshold?

Oh, silly me - I thought you meant he'd read the *book*, not my post! :-)

The violence level so far doesn't seem extreme to me, given the genre and setting, but there are some graphic descriptions... not dwelt on, but still there.
