Sh*t ignorant people say to autistics.

Yep, it's one of those trope videos which uses the form "Sh*t people say to [marginalised group]". (My apologies if it has been posted here before. It's new to me!)

I had to stop myself from scaring the neighbours with breaking out into howling laughter at "Autistic people are so honest." O rly? Because pretending to be something you're not all day long if you want to be regarded as anything but a total freak is so . . . honest :P

I try to think of it more as 'being a very good actor'. Camouflaging one's natural behaviour in order to be accepted by 'norms' is an intelligent response. And takes great stamina and skill to carry off.

I don't see a video here. I don't see anything but a blank space.

Direct link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fTBM_3sdwE
(There's also a full transcript at the link, for those who deal with text better than speech-- as well as an option for subtitles.)

I aspire to be the Santa Claus autistic. No matter what people say I want to laugh and not make them feel bad. When I try to fit into new groups and say stupid things I'm sure they have the same reaction. It's not everyone's responsibility to research every subculture and group to facilitate their lives. The only way they'll learn is indirectly (not yelling rules at their face) through individuals like us.

Yes, I agree. I don't think the video is suggesting that the people who say daft things because they are ignorant are necessarily bad people. But we who experience such ignorant daftness do have a right to roll our eyes in exasperation.

Sharing experiences of encounters with ignorant people helps others among us to understand the beliefs that others hold about us, and to realise that it's not just us who are meeting such peculiar reactions.

This holds true for so many of the other "Stupid sh*t people say to..." videos. It's why the trope is so popular. :)

"Geeks marrying geeks!"

I thought that WAS where a lot of us come from. XD Example: Silicon Valley!

Only explanation for my 140 IQ AS/ADHD son... Both my wife and I have traits, just sub clinical. But the lad seems to have "won" the genetic lottery, or his machine came up three purple shamrocks or something...

Course when WE were kids, no one hard even HEARD of Autism, much less AS. There were only, Normals, Poindexters, Jocks, Geeks, and retards... And we were all in the same classes to just deal.

I have NO idea if we're made actual progress now that there are labels. Labling has certainly given the insurance companies convenient grounds to deny coverage for treatments, pharma and therapy...

Ahaha. All this did was trigger annoyance because nearly every single one of these things have been seriously said to me.
