I want to see the new film 'Adam' but how can I take it seriously when they keep saying 'ass burgers' wtf?! lol. Very silly swear-word, sounds like big piles.

I prefer the soft "j" sound utilized in the UK, but the hard "g" version is the correct pronunciation.

this movie is NOT a positive step for how we are portrayed in the media - it sets us up to be cute innocent savantes, not brooding cynical intellectual titans maladapted to the harsh realities of social customs and restraints :)

yeah it's a bit of a fluff piece. I suppose it may be a good thing that they at least managed to make Adam a likeable, even lovable guy, but ultimately it doesn't really explore the more, um, ponderable sides of AS.

and I detect a note of sarcasm, but I have to say I was actually hoping he'd be more cynical, brooding, and obviously chafing against the skewed game that is (otherwise) consensual reality. I mean, the glib, lived-happily-ever-after ending? even with the movie's own set-up it seemed unlikely. real life is too complicated to be instantly fixed by a short-term relationship with a NT extrovert.

Pff I'm used to that, I'm female. It's a hollywood film I think? so it's just light entertainment. I do recognise the damaging effects of misrepresenting people but that's how things are..

I like your display icon.

An aspie friend of mine in town in his late 40's watched "the squid and the whale" and actually removed it from the DVD player 10 minutes in and threw it against the wall.

I'm in the UK and I've heard various pronunciations here. I personally put the stress on the first 'a' (a short 'a' like in 'cat'), and pronounce the 'g' like a 'j'.

I think it's probably true that using the hard 'g' would be the correct Austrian pronunciation (at least, it would be in German). Still, a lot of words in English aren't pronounced as they would have been in the languages they originally came from - so I don't think it's necessary to do the Austrian thing.

'Ass' in many parts of the UK is actually pronounced 'arse' - so that association isn't so readily suggested here - which is no doubt very lucky for us. I never even thought of the possibility till I started reading posts here.
