This week I have a job. Thing is I have to ride the subways to get to work after riding the commuter rail which means being surrounded by people smacking and popping gum and making other assorted irritating noises ( Read more... )

I think mine are called ifrogz?

Well they are one of those weird hybrid designs with an open back... which, to me, defeats the whole point of in ear canal headphones. There are a few other examples that have the "it goes in your ear, but the back of it is a mesh so the area behind the driver is open" thing going on, and I guess they are okay ( ... )

I find the Skullcandy earphones are great at blocking external noise and giving great sound.

Uhm. Skullcandy is not well thought of amongst the headphone audiophile groups... they mostly are the for looks and not sound quality crowd... And you can get looks and sound quality if ya know where to look..

I wore earplugs today. It seemed to help a little bit, but I could still hear these dudes yammering about something.

Still, I slept most of the way because if I'm working I need a nap before work or I'll fall asleep at work.

just riffing on the in-ear-monitor theme: I swear by my Future Sonics atrios. they come with a million different kinds of foam or silicon sleeves; I use the foam as the silicon ones fall out of my ears. they are comfortable as can be and the bass is so pronounced that I actually had to stop using the heavy bass EQ settings on my ipod because they were too loud! but the high and middle ranges are also very well-defined. best earbuds I've ever heard. it's like you are sitting in the studio control room with the biggest, most expensive monitors piped directly into your brain. :)

the other thing/place I swear by is whitenoisemp3s.com, where you can download free white, pink and brown noise mp3's. she also sells ambient recordings that she makes herself for $9.99 apiece and they are awesome. with my earbuds and her "Lavatory 3AM" recording I can work in the noisiest of environments as though I were alone out in the middle of, well, an empty bathroom at 3am.

recommended for sleep: "Sleepy Car Ride", recorded on the Trans-Canada Highway. ( ... )
