My pleasure. And I should add, I'd be glad to connect Autistic self-advocates interested in working with Robert in upstate New York to him as he sets up an ASAN chapter in his area.
Absolutely true; that committee needs be to stop funding research into countless therapies and start funding programs that directly impact peoples’ lives
This person is AS; people in group homes are often HFA and mostly LFA, I would guess. I don't mean to sound like some kind of Autism Speaks person, but this guy shouldn't hold himself up as an example of the kind of people who have aides in school or are put in group homes.
I agree there should be more support for people who want to live independently or semi-independently but not everyone can do that. I have spent a lot of time at the group homes near my college, which are mostly for mentally retarded people (and maybe some LFA people, I'm not sure), and I think they're pretty great places and shouldn't be equated with an institution.
I skimmed this and I don't live in his area, so I'm sorry to generalize/make assumptions--but I don't really understand what's wrong with group homes, or why he thinks kids should be kept with their families no matter what. Kids who have behavioral issues, and/or have parents who aren't very accepting of the kids' autism, might be better off living with people who are trained.
