LOL this happens to me all the time!
At a certain point in the conversation I see peoples eyes move away (which is probably a sign that I bore them), but it's always too late...

I still debate. Some friends really are asking. Some aren't.

I'm genuinely asking when I ask - unless I'm responding to what I presume to be a ritually insincere query.

Thoreau has something in his journals (I think) about the surprise one can produce by answering "How are you?" in a truthful manner. Anyone remember the quotation or a citation to it?
